Overview

The State of Mississippi owns over 640,000 acres of trust land known as "16th Section Land." Trustees manage the land held in trust and 108 Mississippi public school districts, including the Jackson Public School District.

The allocation of every 16th section of property was set aside in each township for the use and benefit of public schools.

The trustee school districts raise public education funds by leasing 16th Section Land. Classifications of the land include agricultural, forestry, farming, hunting and fishing, recreational, residential, industrial, and mining.

Lake Hico History

The Rex Brown Power lant was built in the 1940s and became Mississippi's first major power plant. The facility leased the land from Jackson Public Schools.

In the 1950s, Lake Hico was built as a cooling pond for the plant's machinery. The pond was fed via a pipeline from the Pearl River.

Entergy retired the plant when it relinquished the lease with Jackson Public Schools in the 2019-2020 school year. In compliance with the original lease, Entergy drained and remediated the lake to restore it to its original use. Before it was a power plant cooling pond, the 600-acre plot was a recreational venue used by the area's residents. Entergy imploded the remaining structure, cleared the land and dismantled the dam.
