About Wakins

  • Namesake

Originally named Liberty Grove School when it was constructed in the late '30s, the school was later renamed after Henry Vaughn Watkins (1888-1944). Watkins, a Lorman native, was educated in the Jackson Public School District, Millsaps and Ole Miss. He practiced law in Jackson for over 30 years. He became a member of the Board of Trustees for Jackson Public Schools in 1916 and served the Board as president from 1920-1933. He was instrumental in the establishment of the Hinds Junior College at Raymond. Over 75 years later, the school continues to provide a quality education to the local community.
