    Star School

The Jackson Public School District recognizes the significant presence of military families in our community due to the proximity of local military installations. We are thrilled to welcome these families to our schools and are committed to providing the support they need. Please review the information on the following pages to learn more about our resources for military families, and feel free to contact us at 601.960.5393 with any questions.

  • School Liaison Officer

The School Liaison Officer serves as the primary link between schools, commanders and military parents in K-12 academic matters. The job of the SLO is to inform and connect military families to the resources and information needed to maximize educational opportunities for their children. School liaisons provide assistance as needed in school enrollment and in-/out-processing and educate parents on how to be the best advocates for their children. School liaisons inform local school officials of base programs, policies and activities. They prepare news releases and write articles for installation newspapers to help educate the base population regarding available resources and school programs and policies. They work with the installation’s public affairs office and with other MWR venues to plan and coordinate installation tours and other engagements for school administrators, teachers and students.

Military and Family Life Counseling (MFLC)

Jackson Public School District is pleased to offer non-medical counseling to our military-connected students. MFLCs support military families through the unique challenges of military life by providing non-medical, short-term counseling. Our Military and Family Life Counselor has helped students with a variety of challenges including school adjustment, deployment and separation, academics, communication, behavioral concerns, and stress management. Non-medical counseling sessions are free and confidential.

What is the counselor’s role in the school?

MFLCs provide consultation, training, and educational presentations/workshops to program faculty, staff, parents, and children. MFLC support augments services already in place at each school. Counselors take part in everyday school activities and events.
They are available to support in areas related to deployment and reintegration, family dynamics, positive coping mechanisms, staff support and education, parent education and stress reduction. Counselors are also available to facilitate groups and trainings to
build leadership skills, manage anger, build self-esteem and confidence and strengthen communication.
